Salt Beef for Christmas

It takes about 10 days to cure a decent bit of salt beef. Curing salts and spices can be sourced from sausagemaking.org who have an online shop. Add a few juniper berries, cloves and bay leaves for even more flavour. The silverside came for F.L Edge, a great butchers shop in East Harling.  Ok, it is in Norfolk, but only just. This piece will be ready for my daughters 21st birthday party on Dec 17th.

La Hogue Farm Shop

La Hogue Farm was on my route on Thursday so I called in to take a look.  I didn't have time to try the cafe which looked really inviting and had an interesting menu.  Has anybody been? I came away with an excellent pork pie and a lemon and ginger loaf, both of which were very good value. this is much more than just a cafe and deli - take a look for yourself - a great stop off the A11 close to both Newmarket and Mildenhall.

Being Dish of the Day

I can hardly bear to say the c word but we wiill be looking for a Dish of the Day for that time of year when everyone gives each other presents, and for November and October too. If you have a nice recipe and look good in an apron why not appear on here? It's just an e mail away and you don't have to be a chef; let's have a home cook  - from WEST Suffolk.

Baked Red Cabbage

A good side dish to go with pork and great as we approach the 'Hungry Gap' when veggies are less interesting. Baked red cabbage.

Blinis

You can't beat a delicious blini topped with smoked salmon and creme fraiche to perk up a cold February evening. We'll be making these as a canapes tomorrow night for little party. Here is our recipe.

Home made Christmas everything

I made the mini mince pies and Sarah made the alcoholic cake as my Christmas present - how lovely is that!

We are Grumpy at suffolk foodie

...because we have all been ILL, that's why. I have only eaten one kiwi fruit since Christmas eve. I missed canapes twice, a full roast turkey dinner, desserts, loads of wine and all the extras like mince pies, cake and big slabs of home cooked ham.  Am only just getting my appetite back - this was a very un-merry christmas for me.

Fabulous Fudge at the Craft Fair

With really nice flavours - salted caramel, lavender (although I didn't like this one...) passion fruit (yum) all made with natural flavours and in small batches in Thurston.

Woolpit fish and chips

Well it's December and I haven't been anywhere nice for the last week, in fact I haven't been anywhere - nice or not.  I was thinking about making mince pies and looked up Delia's recipe but decided not to buy all the ingredients just for a few, as I know it will be me that eats them all. I haven't bought any because first of all I won't like them as much as home made and secondly, if you want Christmas to start the week before and end the week after, there is something really exciting about waiting to eat that first mince pie and my mum makes the best. So, fed up with cooking and no children around this evening to make it too expensive I secretly bought Woolpit fish (plaice) and chips and they were really really nice.

Tasted my sloe gin over Christmas - very nice.

Some people have asked why I don't put bad reviews on here? Because there are too many restaurants serving ordinary or worse food - that's why. I could write something about mediocre food every day - the tiny overcooked overpriced portion of sea bass I had at a Bury hotel, or disgusting local Chinese takeaway or cheese on toast made with sliced white bread topped with a plastic wrapped cheese slice and melted in the microwave - I've had all of these. But I want to celebrate good food and hope that sooner or later you will tell me where it is. If you're not on here it's because I haven't been there or I have, and it isn't any good.
